Kitchen Mystery: Baking Powder or Soda?

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

Lizz is firing up the oven for the first time in our new place to do some baking. Some time during the move the labels on many of our kitchen canisters went missing. We’d identified everything but weren’t sure which of the two identical, black canisters held baking soda and which held baking […]

Flee to the Woodlands!

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

Lizz, Honey and I are joining Chris and Cheryl for a last minute log cabin retreat in the woods up state. No TV. No Internet. I’ve got a pile of books, a box full of food and kitchen supplies. Chris & Cheryl have crates of leftover booze from their housewarming party. […]

Restaurant mini-review: L’Exquisitous

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Chris and I hit up a new addition to the neighborhood: L’Exquisitous (Manhattan Ave. at 107). Started by the owner of now defunct Gumbo and another partner, the menu is a mix of New Orleans cuisine (brought over from Gumbo), Haitian specialties and more standard cafe fare. And they have free wireless Internet. […]

Restaurant mini-review: Noche Mexicana

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Seeking an alternative source for decent Mexican food, given our abysmal experience at Mama Mexico, Tuesday night we hit up Noche Mexicana (Amsterdam between 101 and 102). They serve up excellent, authentic $2 tacos with some delicious and overly generous fillers (two are a meal!).

Restaurant mini-review: Rack & Soul

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Spring has finally arrived. To celebrate, Lizz and I decided to have a take-out picnic. I’d been meaning to check out Rack & Soul (109 & Broadway) since hearing about it on Uptown Flavor. While the ribs (the most important part!) were pretty good (tender, not *too* dry but I like ‘em […]

Restaurant mini-review: Suma

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

I’ve been checking out restaurants in the neighborhood lately. On Good Friday, Lizz and I hit up Suma (Amsterdam b/w 107 & 108) to get a sushi fix. The place is tiny, but fits comfortably in the tight space; very Japanese. The food was very good and prices were reasonable, however the […]

Saigon Grill-icious

Sunday, January 1st, 2006

To contrast my negative local restaurant rant, here’s a positive one. Tonight Lizz and I returned to one of the first NYC dining experiences: Saigon Grill. We were staying at a B&B in an Upper West Side brownstone, and were too hungry to hunt down a “recommended” place, so we settled on the […]

Just Say No to Mama Mexico

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

Why is it that mediocre and wonderful dining experiences rarely compel one to spend time preparing a rant, but a poor dining experience is such a strong motivator? Our dinner experience tonight incited me to actually create a MenuPages.com account (MenuPages is a great resource for New Yorkers looking for a bite; I have […]

PETA Rant

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

I am very open-minded on animal rights and animal welfare issues. The way we treat animals (who have the capacity to suffer) for our human ends deserves serious scrutiny and debate. For over a year I chose a vegetarian diet in large part because I abhor the way animals are often treated to […]

Nutritional Yeast Salad Dressing

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

Gregory and Amanda both heartily recommended this recipe for salad dressing featuring nutritional yeast. I love it on my popcorn and in the occasional tofu scramble, so this sounds good to me:

Combine in a blender:

1/2 cup nut’l yeast
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup soy/tamari
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
2 T garlic

Slowly drizzle in 1 to 1-1/2 cups […]
