Pinnacle Booting Tenants in Manhattan Valley
I neglected to mention that, in addition to eating barbecue, I tagged along with a walking tour of our neighborhood on my birthday. I didn’t take notes or take pictures but it helped shore up a lot of my theories and hypotheses about the neighborhood (more on that later). The most topical issue that came up on the walk is that, like many places in Harlem, Manhattan Valley apartment buildings are being bought up by the particularly controversial Pinnacle management company. Word is that the buildings purchased by Pinnacle were previously managed by notoriously bad landlords and were a big part of the rodent problem in the neighborhood. Pinnacle has been great at cleaning up their building’s pest problems but they also seem to specialize in booting long term, rent stabilized tenants. They’ve been making headlines all over the city for their aggressive tactics. In this neighborhood, more recent immigrants include Mexican families who have been renting cheap, but illegal basement apartments who have been among the first to be removed. I hope I can dig up more information on the neighborhood since it seems to be changing rapidly.
