Venture capital pays my rent
Tuesday was a busy night. I stopped in at the Labor & Blogs event at the UFT and had some good conversations, but left before the event started to go to the NY Tech Meetup and then on to the tail end of the Craigslist Foundation mixer for more good conversation. I almost cut out the Meetup to attend the other two events, but I’m glad I decided to go. Not only were some of the demos cool, but during the announcement some folks from Pando announced they were looking for a mid-level php developer right before I announced the upcoming Drupal Camp. I tapped the Pando guys afterward, who have a Drupal site, handed them my card, got a phone call and interview on Wednesday and a job offer, which I accepted, yesterday.
There are many reasons I’m leaving my current gig that I can’t really blog about. The fact that I can’t write about it is itself among the reasons. However, I do think that in the end that the organization’s needs and my interests didn’t match up as well as we’d thought.
This is my first foray into the for-profit world in a long time. I’m excited to be working with what seems to be a very cool, very sharp team and on something innovative and new. I like that the product attempts to solve a very simple, increasingly common problem: namely, how to send large files easily over email. My heart is with the non-profits I’ve worked for, and I’ll probably return to mission-oriented work one day, but I think this is the kind of gig I need right now.

Congrats Mang! How was the tech portion of the interview? I love to hear about what tech companies ask their peeps! Mike Topper applied to MLB.com and they asked him crazy ask questions about design patterns… like uhh, dude, its just baseball…
