Restaurant mini-review: Rack & Soul
Spring has finally arrived. To celebrate, Lizz and I decided to have a take-out picnic. I’d been meaning to check out Rack & Soul (109 & Broadway) since hearing about it on Uptown Flavor. While the ribs (the most important part!) were pretty good (tender, not *too* dry but I like ‘em a little bit juicy). Lizz thought the sauce tasted like Open Pit with a better finish (and not the nasty high fructose corn syrup taste). The fried chicken was good, but unremarkable — good, crisp batter that sticks well to the bird, but very lightly seasoned. The mac & cheese was terrible — it tasted mostly like noodles with clumps of flavorless cheese here and there. The stewed okra was similarly disappointing; I couldn’t taste the okra at all and it was heavy on the sauce, which tasted like unseasoned Heinz Tomato Sauce from a can. The corn biscuits were great; very sweet, which is not very Southern, but this is Yankee territory, so I’ll give them that. And it all went splendidly with a Riverside Park sunset.

Cool mini-review. That pretty much sums up the Charles’ Southern food that I had. I can’t believe that people rave about the flavorless foods. At least I can taste the food at Sylvia’s in spite of the service. She has a great Okra, corn and tomato side dish!
