Republican Friendster
A friend of mine passed on a rather disturbing link to a Republican blogger ranting about the evils of Linux. I can’t tell if this is satire (think overdone Colbert Report) or if this woman really is this nuts. (Post summary: Linux is a foreign, communist, unamerican attempt to destroy the US software industry).
In any case, in trying to determine whether this was serious, I stumbled on her profile on GOP.com. GOP.com is the Republic National Committee’s web site. It allows anyone to create a “profile” a la Friendster (or MySpace, Facebook, etc.). With each profile are a suite of organizing tools. Users set personal “grassroots goals” for fundraising, volunteer recruitment, voter registration and other actions, and the profile page shows their progress (think Dean’s red bat on a per individual basis) on each of those goals for that user. It’s thoroughly disappointing that the Dean-led DNC doesn’t have nearly as well-developed a set of grassroots online tools.
