Del.icio.us Experiment Over

The last few days I tried an experiment: auto-posting links from my del.icio.us account (a web-based social bookmarking service) directly to this blog nightly. I often bookmark cool, interesting things with insightful comments on del.icio.us, and since few people actually use del.icio.us, I wanted people who read my blog could see what was happening there. George (who does watch my del.icio.us activity) immediately begged me to cease, but I decided to give it a few days. My thoughts:

  • The formatting sucks, though this could easily be fixed in CSS, since all tags are appropriately classed
  • It has lead to people discovering things they wouldn’t otherwise have seen; mission accomplished
  • Since I post relatively infrequently, the del.icio.us posts dominate the blog

I think on a busier blog, with multiple posts a day, the del.icio.us posts would be a great addition. In my case, I think they’re simply taking over. So, until I decide to speak more frequently, I encourage you to watch my feed or check out my SuperGlu page which includes this blog, my del.icio.us links and my Flickr (photo) posts.

So, as Brian said, “End Fire Hose Mode.”

I thought that the congress vote RSS site was kickass (all of the WI representatives are in my Bloglines feed now). Otherwise, yeah. We Americans have low attention spans.

See Cyndy’s sidebar at Mousemusings. She uses the RSS feed from del.icio.us to put the titles of her flicker links in a little sidebar box. I’ll probably do it too, when I get around to it.

I have added one, that updates, to the top of my page… trying to attract interest as well…

Joseph, yeah I thought about doing that. I plan to do something like that with Flickr. I’m not sure how best to do that with del.icio.us since the tags and the comments are more interesting than the title, and I’m not sure how I’d cram that in without it being kind of obnoxious. I’ll think on this and when I do the Flickr changes, I’ll see if I can figure out how to squeeze in the del.icio.us stuff, too.

hmm.. I swear I saw a mod for textpatter or wordpress the other day to do this rather nicely. I’ll try to find it again, scott, and get it too you. I don’t like their name. aside from that, it’s great.

[…] I finally hooked together my del.icio.us account with this blog so each day it will post any links I post to that service for the day. We’ll see how it goes. Scott tried this and stopped because it was taking over his blog. Since I’m a less habitual user of del.icio.us I’m not worried about it taking over the site, but we’ll see. […]
