ArborUpdate, an Ann Arbor area news blog I help operate recently posted an article on a clash provoked by white supremacists marching through a neighborhood in nearby Toledo. Google lead the racists to ArborUpdate, where they began to spew their hate in the comments thread. Rather than deleting comments and engaging in a comment war, we decided instead to take a cue from Planned Parenthood, Dean-iacs and the queer community in Ann Arbor and start a pledge drive. For every comment posted by a racist on the blog, people are pledging some amount of money to the La Grange Development Corporation, a non-profit located in the affected neighborhood that works for affordable housing, with local small businesses and with crime prevention programs (or other anti-racist cause of her choice).
