Global Voices

cross-posted to the Every Country Club

I just listened to an NPR podcast called Open Source about international bloggers. One of the more interesting projects they discussed was Global Voices. It was founded by dissatisfied CNN foreign correspondent Rebecca MacKinnon, among others.

The primary mission of Global Voices is twofold: 1) To call attention to the most interesting conversations and perspectives emerging from citizens’ media around the world by linking to text, audio, and video blogs and other forms of grassroots citizens’ media being produced by people around the world; 2) To facilitate the emergence of new citizens’ voices through training, online tutorials, and publicizing the ways in which open-source and free tools can be used safely by people around the world to express themselves.

It’s difficult to connect or identify with a newspaper article about another country, especially if you’ve never been there and have no personal connections. However, by reading blogs written by someone in another country, you make that connection and start to care. And you must care before you understand. Global Voices is a great way to land yourself into these conversations around the planet. Ahoy!
