Laptopless

I got a copy of Tiger (the new version of Mac OS X) for my PowerBook a couple weeks ago. Last week Satruday I’d set aside some time to reinstall the machine from the ground up, because I’d been having some problems with certain apps. Tiger refused to install, and when I ran Disk Utility from the install DVD, it told me my hard drive “S.M.A.R.T. Status” was reporting imminent drive failure. Crap! So instead spent my time backing up all my files to an external hard drive, some files disappearing as I made the copies. I was travelling early in the week so I wasn’t able to ship it off to Apple until yesterday. I hope it comes back soon and fixed — though I’m not yet going as nuts as I thought I might. It turns out most of the stuff I use is on the network.

If you have a Mac and want to check your HD SMART Status, use the free utility SmartReporter. This may be built in to Tiger, but I couldn’t tell you since I haven’t been able to upgrade yet. This should be an educational week.

What kind of PowerBook was this, might I ask? I have had THREE 12-Inch PowerBook G4s that I have had dealings with, that the drives have gone bad - all with S.M.A.R.T. errors… Lemme know if thats the same kind of machine you’re dealing with. :)

I shipped it late Friday and it arrived back here this morning. That was FAST!
