Global Voices

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

cross-posted to the Every Country Club
I just listened to an NPR podcast called Open Source about international bloggers. One of the more interesting projects they discussed was Global Voices. It was founded by dissatisfied CNN foreign correspondent Rebecca MacKinnon, among others.
The primary mission of Global Voices is twofold: 1) To call attention to […]

Laptopless

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

I got a copy of Tiger (the new version of Mac OS X) for my PowerBook a couple weeks ago. Last week Satruday I’d set aside some time to reinstall the machine from the ground up, because I’d been having some problems with certain apps. Tiger refused to install, and when I ran […]

Happy Birthday to Me

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

Yesterday was my birthday. On my way home from a meeting Up North near Higgins Lake, Lizz, Honey and I stopped at my parents’ house. We went out for dinner at El Charro, a Mexican restaurant we’ve been going to since before I can remember, when they were a tiny hole-in-the-wall. The […]

Google Adds Ratings

Saturday, May 14th, 2005

This slashdot post points out that Google has added movie times and reviews when you search on a movie title, for example. The reviews appear to be aggregated in a Google News sort of way, pulled from various reputable online sources. I’m not sure how they’re getting the “out of five star” ratings […]

Oops

Friday, May 13th, 2005

On my way to Hank’s (a former co-worker) “goodbye” lunch today, I spotted this truck which had hit the railroad tressle on Liberty west of Main. It was a rental, so the driver probably had no idea what his/her clearance was, but it was certainly less than 10′6″. Oops.
George caught this too.

Thought Criminal

Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

MSN UK is running a Thought Thieves video contest, calling “intelectual property thieves,” “thought thieves.” I guess that makes creatively reusing what should be our cultural commons a thought crime. Hasn’t Microsoft learned they should avoid Orwellian language?

People’s Place

Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

Murph also writes about his semester project report, called “People’s Place.”
General idea: ground level People’s Food Co-op, below-grade dedicated food co-op parking, second floor public parking, 3rd-5th floors have 40 co-housing units (25% permanently affordable through a land trust), usable green / garden roof. Note no parking included for the residential - they can buy […]

Tenants’ Saga

Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

Murph posted his saga with his Ann Arbor landord. Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4
If you have questions about your landlord, the MichiganTenants.org web site has a lot of good information. If you’re not a University of Michigan student and a Washtenaw County resident, they can provide assistance over […]

Fundable

Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

At SXSW I ran in to a guy I used to work with at the Daily (Forgot his name! He has red hair and glasses; former photog.) who was working on Fundable, which is a web based tool for organizing people to pay for something. I can see this being useful telethon-style fundraising on […]

A post without a blog

Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

From the copyfighters at DownhillBattle.org comes Conversate, a new tool for web-based discussions. The best way I can describe it is: imagine a blog post detached from a blog. I started a meta conversation about conversate on conversate. Whoa, meta…
