Tip: Umich SpamBox & Thunderbird

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

If you’re using the University of Michigan SpamBusters‘ new SpamBox feature and the Mozilla Thunderbird email client, install the Thunderbird mailredirect extension. Instead of forwarding your spam, “Redirect” it to preserve the full headers, giving the spam filter more information, improving it’s ability to identify spam.

Code Factory on a Barge

Wednesday, April 20th, 2005

Infamous G.E. CEO Jack Welch once said, “Ideally you would have every plant you own on a barge.” The idea being you could move your factory to whichever totalitarian dictatorship had the lowest taxes, fewest worker & environmental protections, and most desperate population.
It seems that some San Diego entrepeneurs are attempting to realize a […]

Smoke Signals

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005

So, we have a new pope. I was disappointed, if not surprised, by the choice. Andrew Sullivan says it better than I could:
THE FUNDAMENTALIST TRIUMPH: And so the Catholic church accelerates its turn toward authoritarianism, hostility to modernity, assertion of papal supremacy and quashing of internal debate and dissent. We are back […]

Michigan Independent Launches

Monday, April 18th, 2005

The Michigan Independent launched last week. The intent is something like a liberal version of the Michigan Review, funded by Campus Progress (a project of American Progress).
I sat in on one of the early meetings to see where the project would go and offer assistance if needed. I still haven’t seen a copy […]

RSS for the Masses, U of M

Monday, April 18th, 2005

My friend satadru says:
Imagine netnewswire lite bundled on the blue disk, with preloaded feeds for things like UM News, and the Michigan Daily.
Brilliant! First, the Daily and other U sites need rss feeds. But even five feeds would be a good start. They’d also need a Windows client. Combine this with […]

Your Genetic Ancestry

Thursday, April 14th, 2005

National Geographic’s Genographic Project is tracing human history by studying DNA from people all over the globe. Using “genetic markers,” scientists can trace the human evolutionary timeline. In addition to collecting DNA samples from widely dispersed indigenous peoples, individuals are invited to join the project and see their genetic tree traced back to […]

Thursday, April 14th, 2005

(For my planning geek friends via WorldChanging)
ARTHUR is a tool for urban planning that has a physical table-top model with a virtual layer super-imposed over it, viewable with special headsets. When you move a physical object, the virtual models for things like pedestrian flow change in real time. I’d like to play […]

Meet Upcoming.org

Thursday, April 14th, 2005

If you haven’t heard by now, MeetUp.com recently announced it is going to start charging group organizers a monthly fee. This is going to kill every group I’ve ever been involved with on MeetUp, and I won’t be surprised if it kills the service in the long run. If you’re looking for an […]

Punk TV

Thursday, April 14th, 2005

We need a movement that does for video what punk rock did for music. We have the tools. Perhaps this is part of the beginning?

Thieves!

Saturday, April 9th, 2005

Last night, my friend Rob was in town and it was my friend John’s birthday. After work, I met both of them at Dominic’s for a long night of drinking. Two bottles of wine later, I thought it wise to leave my bike parked downtown overnight and seek other means of transportation. […]
